The Property Ombudsman (TPO) resolves disputes referred by landlords or tenants and relating to lettings and management agents that are members of the scheme. These agents follow the Code of Practice for Letting Agents, for which we are seeking OFT (Office of Fair Trading) approval, in common with the Code of Practice for Residential Sales. Please note that disputes relating to repayment of deposits paid by tenants and which are protected by an approved Tenancy Deposit Scheme should be referred to the relevant deposit protection scheme.
The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (ARLA) was formed in 1981 as the professional and regulatory body for letting agents in the UK. It was recognised that the requirements of the residential lettings market were so detailed and specific that a separate organisation was required to promote standards in this important and growing sector of the property market.

The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) is the UK’s leading professional body for estate agency. Its 10,000 members practice across all aspects of property both in the UK and overseas, including residential and commercial sales and letting, property management, business transfer, auctioneering and land.

The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS) is an accreditation scheme for lettings and management agents offering peace of mind to landlords and tenants in knowing that they are dealing with a firm which agrees to meet defined standards of customer service, together with having in place the necessary insurances to protect clients' money plus a customer complaints procedure offering independent redress.
The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS)
The UK Association of Letting Agents (UKALA) is the professional association for the lettings industry, promoting high standards and protecting the interests of agents, landlords and tenants. UKALA is a non-profit organisation registered with the government department responsible for housing. The majority of letting agents in the UK are not members of a trade organisation. UKALA fulfils the need for a professional body, dedicated to representing the interests of letting and management agents, while safeguarding the interests of clients - both landlords and tenants. The UKALA Code of Practice enshrines the objective of raising the professionalism of letting and managing agents by offering an efficient and responsible service to landlords and tenants.

The Association of Professional Inventory Providers (APIP) aims to provide a service for either in-house or independent inventory providers - by offering a recognised standard of inventory provision, provision of advice and guidance and opportunities for professional development. APIP offers inventory providers the opportunity to have their professionalism recognised by use of post-nominals (e.g. A N Other MAPIP) and the APIP logo; and to promote their service via the APIP website. APIP also provides landlords, property management agents and tenants with the names of and access to accredited inventory providers, with the reassurance that an APIP member meets professional standards, is fully insured and follows the APIP Code of Practice.
